A medical watch has a gradation either on the dial or the bezel that can be used by doctors to measure a patient's pulse. In the case of a chronograph, you would depress the pusher and start taking the patient's pulse. After you've counted out the number of pulsations indicated on the dial (usually 15 or 30) the second hand would indicate the person's pulse. Essentially, it was a tool to save doctors time and simplify the procedure, instead of counting out a patient's pulse over an entire minute. https://omegaforums.net/threads/medical-watches.60120/
